CHEER POLICIES
High School Cheer Trainer Program
The Palos Verdes Mavericks High School Cheer Trainer Program provides student leaders with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in youth athletics, mentorship, and team support. Trainers work alongside our cheer teams and coaching staff to assist with practices, game-day organization, athlete support, and skill development in a structured and supervised environment.
This program is designed for responsible high school students who are interested in leadership, coaching, and who want to give back to the Mavericks community while earning volunteer hours. Student Trainers develop communication skills, teamwork, accountability, and a deeper understanding of youth athletic safety and preparation. All trainers are supervised at all times by cleared adult coaches to ensure a safe, positive, and structured experience for both trainers and athletes.
Eligibility
The High School Cheer Trainer Program is open to current high school cheerleaders and song leaders in grades 9–12.
Rising 9th grade students (current 8th graders) may apply during their 8th grade year and, if selected, will begin participation following completion of middle school. All applicants must demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and the ability to serve as positive role models within a youth athletic environment.
Application & Selection Process
Prospective Student Trainers must submit a completed Trainer Application during the designated registration window.
Submission of an application does not guarantee placement, as positions are limited and based on program needs.
Qualified applicants may be invited to participate in an interview and/or evaluation process. Selection is based on:
• Leadership and maturity
• Responsibility and reliability
• Communication skills
• Prior cheer or athletic experience (if applicable)
• Academic standing
• Overall readiness to work in a youth athletic environment
Once selected, Student Trainers must complete all required documentation and training requirements prior to participating in any practices, games, or team activities. No trainer may begin service until all required forms and certifications have been submitted and approved.
Trainer Responsibilities
Student Trainers may assist with:
• Practice organization and setup
• Skill demonstrations (as appropriate)
• Athlete support and encouragement
• Game-day logistics
• Equipment organization
• Team communication support
Student Trainers:
• Do not serve as primary coaches
• Do not act as designated safety personnel
• Must remain under direct supervision of a cleared adult coach at all times
Attendance & Participation Expectations
Student Trainers are expected to demonstrate reliability and consistent commitment throughout the season. Participation includes:
• Attending weekly team practices (approximately two practices per week)
• Attending scheduled games
• Attending team camp
• Attending competitions with their assigned squad
Trainers are expected to communicate proactively regarding absences and uphold the same standards of commitment and accountability expected of coaching staff.
Continued participation in the program is contingent upon meeting attendance, conduct, and performance expectations.
